How to do Search Engine Optimisation for your website or blog

What is Search Engine Optimisation?
Search engine optimisation is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics that are used to increase the amount of visitors to your website by getting high/front page placement in the search results page of various search engines. Search engine optimisation is useful as most people browsing the internet will click one of the first few results, they typically don't go through multiple pages of search results and so the ranking is important to ensure traffic is directed towards the site. If your site is higher in the organic results of a search there is a greater chance the site will be visited.

Search Engine Optimisation uses how the search engines work, what people search for, the search terms typically used and what search engines are preferred by the target audience for the website. To optimise your website you will probably have to edit the content and the HTML in order to increase the relevance and remove anything that will hinder the indexing activities of search engines.
Types of SEO
There are different types of SEO - white hat or ethical SEO, and black hat/unethical SEO. White hat SEO is the type that I would recommend you use - it uses optimisation strategies and techniques that focus on a human audience rather than just the search engines and it completely follows the rules and policies of the search engines.

Black hat SEO uses aggressive tactics that focus only on the search engines and not the human audience and typically does not obey search engine guidelines, some black hat strategies include keyword stuffing, doorway pages, invisible text and adding unrelated keywords to the page content. It is usually used by people who are looking for quick financial return on their website rather than long term investment, and it doesn't produce good content for the end users.

What should you do?
  • Ensure you are providing quality content to the people visiting your page, this should be unique to you and offer real value/use to visitors.
  • Research the keywords that people are actually using so that when you produce content you effectively answer that query.
  • Use the keywords you have found effectively, don't spam your readers but make sure you actually use the words in your articles.
  • Add new, relevant content as sometimes Google will look to see if there is fresh content on a certain topic, being the top of the search query will boost your site a lot.
  • Make your site mobile friendly - more and more users are browsing from their mobiles and thus being mobile friendly will give you better rankings on mobile searches.
  • Use descriptive URLs and HTTPS.
  • Use descriptive titles, especially in the HTML title tag.
  • Engage your users - encourage your users to stay on the page to look through the content, or to post comments.
  • Get high quality, trusted links to your domain, e.g. an article from the BBC about your page will be much more effective for increasing your rank than a comment in an unknown blog.
  • Make a page for your site on a social network to encourage shares/links and also to access more of your target audience - people are more likely to click a link shared by one of their friends.
